Arbitrage without borrowing or short selling?

چکیده

We show that a trader, who starts with no initial wealth and is not allowed to borrow money or short sell assets, is theoretically able to attain positive wealth by continuous trading, provided that she has perfect foresight of future asset prices, given by a continuous semimartingale. Such an arbitrage strategy can be constructed as a process of finite variation that satisfies a seemingly innocuous selffinancing condition, formulated using a pathwise Riemann–Stieltjes integral. Our result exemplifies the potential intricacies of formulating economically meaningful self-financing conditions in continuous time, when one leaves the conventional arbitrage-free framework.

Testing Efficiency of an Arbitrage in Foreign Exchange Market (Forex): Simultaneous Ordering of Three Major Currency Pairs

In searching a market-neutral arbitrage strategy in forex market, we took a portfolio of three major currency pairs, EUR-USD, USD-JPY, and EUR-JPY. There are eight approaches, different cases of short and long positions; for example buying 1st and selling two others, etc. Historical daily FX rates were gathered since January 1990 until February 2011. Hedging American contingent claims with constrained portfolios

The valuation theory for American Contingent Claims, due to Bensoussan (1984) and Karatzas (1988), is extended to deal with constraints on portfolio choice, including incomplete markets and borrowing/short-selling constraints, or with different interest rates for borrowing and lending. In the unconstrained case, the classical theory provides a single arbitrage-free price u0; this is expressed a...

Arbitrage and investment opportunities

We consider a model in which any investment opportunity is described in terms of cash flows. We don’t assume that there is a numéraire, enabling investors to transfer wealth through time; the time horizon is not supposed to be finite and the investment opportunities are not specifically related to the buying and selling of securities on a financial market. In this quite general framework, we sh...

On the Pricing of Contingent Claims under Constraints

We discuss the problem of pricing contingent claims, such as European call-options, based on the fundamental principle of “absence of arbitrage” and in the presence of constraints on portfolio choice, e.g. incomplete markets and markets with short-selling constraints. Under such constraints, we show that there exists an arbitrage-free interval which contains the celebrated Black-Scholes price (...

Dynamic Systems and Applications 20 (2011) 205-222 OPTIMAL INVESTMENT AND PROPORTIONAL REINSURANCE UNDER NO SHORT-SELLING AND NO BORROWING

Insurance companies resort to investment and reinsurance, among other options, to manage their reseerves. This article addresses the problem of optimal investment and reinsurance when no short-selling and no borrowing allowed. More specifically, we assume that the risk process of the insurance company is a compound Poisson process perturbed by a standard Brownian motion and that the risk can be...
